PORT 1: Getting ready for the voyage - Start your EXPLORER'S JOURNAL (which you need to create with partner) with your CORNELL notes from Chapter 3, Section 1 of MWH pp. 92-101.

  • What possible rewards might come from exploring the seas for new lands?
The kinds of rewards that might come from exploring the seas for new land is that they might be capable of gaining gold from the other lands. They could spread their own religion, in which case, it is christianity. They could also find new trading routes to other countries so they can trade more and gain more goods. The person who made the exploration could gain fame and they could be remembered throughout history.

  • What are the risks involved in embarking on a voyage into the unknown?
They could get lost because they do not know where they are going. Therefore, they do not know what kind of problems they should expect and that makes traveling a huge risk. They do not know how long the voyage will take and what kind of things they will find when they reach land. Therefore, if they go to the unknown, they could have the risk of not finding land and they could run short on food and water. They might also be captured as intruders if they land on a foreign land with foreign people.

  • What will you do if you actually run into other people?
I would try to communicate with them in either english or in body gestures if they do not understand my language. I would also try and get to trade goods with them or gain some food, because during the journey, I could have run short on food. I would also try to make them see that I am not intruders and that I am friendly, so that they would not attack me and my ship.

Compass
The compass is a tool that helps sailors navigate through the ocean and find where they are. There is a needle inside the compass that always points to the north pole.

Before, this they had to look at the stars, however, with this technology, the sailors can sail with ease.

Port 3: The atlantic slave trade
There are many things that I can say about the african slave trade. I am a british sailor and was chosen to go on the trip to get the captured africans and take them to the west indies so that we can trade them for goods. I asked why we were trading african slaves and what they said was that when we europeans began to explore africa, we found the good uses of africans and started to use them as slaves for america. The reasons were because they had immunity to many diseases and they had a lot of experience farming and could be taught plantation work. They were less likely to escape because they did not know the land so well. Then I took all the merchandised goods and loaded them onto my ship. We sailed to africa and there we captured the africans. They looked and were treated as beasts. They wore muzzles and were whipped from the back. When they got onto my ship, they were all put into a crowd and they were tied up so they could not move. The smell was disgusting. It smelled by blood and sweat. During the voyage, many died from disease and the others were getting nervous that they were going to get the disease as well. We sailed in a specific pattern. It was called the triangular trade route. First of all we took all the merchandised goods and went to africa to trade them with the african slaves. Then we would sail to the west indies where we would sell these slaves for goods such as sugar and molasses. However, there were many consequences. Africa was becoming poorer and poorer because we kept on taking the young and healthy, while only the old were left. Not only that, as I had said before, many of them died from disease and many of them got whipped. The african families were also split apart. However, when the slaves arrived on they worked hard and they brought their culture and tradition and that started to influence the americans. The africans and the americans also started to have mixed children. The population of american african increased.
